If the death was unexpected, call 999. If at home, call the GP.

The doctor or hospital will issue a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death. You need this to formally register the death.

This usually happens automatically if the cause of death is unknown or sudden. The doctor or police will advise you.

Check the NHS Organ Donor Register or the deceased's Will if you believe they wished to donate.

A funeral director can bring your loved one into their care. You do not have to choose your final funeral director right away.

Check whether they have already paid for their funeral with a pre-need plan.

Try to find the original Will. This will tell you who the executors are and may contain funeral wishes.

The executors named in the Will are legally responsible for dealing with the estate.

For example, mortgage payments, rent, insurance premiums, business payroll, pending property transactions.

Ensure any children, elderly dependants, or pets have care arranged.

Family, close friends and if relevant, employer and community/religious leaders. Consider asking one person to relay the news.

If their home is now empty, ensure all doors and windows are locked, and turn off unnecessary utilities.
