Do I need probate?

Probate is the legal process of validating a will and distributing the deceased's assets. Whether a grant of probate is required depends on the type and value of each asset. There is no single limit, all institutions set their own threshold for releasing funds without a grant.

Where did they live?

Did they own their home?

What bank accounts did they own?

Only add accounts in their sole name. Joint accounts pass to the surviving owner. Each bank sets its own limit, so it's the total with each that matters.

Shares, belongings, life insurance and pensions are treated differently from bank accounts. As before, anything held jointly passes to the surviving owner and doesn't need a grant.
